EXPEDITION OF PEDRO GARCIA ET DE NAVARRE OF TOLEDO CONTRE DJERBA (1510) ACCORDING TO SOURCES ABADHITES

FOREWORD

I pointed out in my paper entitled books of the sect abadhile document which I give here the text and translation. It has been partially translated from M by. Tunisian Journal Bossoutrot in January 1903 (Document Muslims to serve a story Djerba). But the text has not been given and the translation is incomplete, I thought there was interest in publishing this manuscript verbatim, which contains the story of the attempt in September 1510 against the island of Djerba by Pierre de Navarre and Don Garcia de Toledo.

The author of this relationship is unknown ; but it is likely that it is an inhabitant of Djerba and it is certain that he belonged to the sect abâdhite.

Male and Rodham island of Djerba

Arrivée des chrétiens à l'île de Djerba (may God protect and guard their attacks and it is always for its inhabitants and a protective support).

Here is what the editor : When Muslims living in the Maghrib had learned that Christians had seized Mers el Kebir, They were frightened and saddened by this event, knowing that the Oran decision was inevitable and that the occupation of this city expose the rest of the Maghrib in terrible danger. They lived at dice with the fear that their predictions come true. God had delivered its judgment, Christians Oran seized in the course of Muharram, first month of the year 915 (21 April 1509). The Muslims became extreme grief and anxieties accrurent. They said that the expectation of evil is more painful than the misfortune itself.

In the month of Ramadhan (December. 1509 January-- vier 1510) the same year, Christians took the city of Bougie. The announcement of this new event further increased the consternation reigned among Muslims in other regions. Most people were afraid of the island of Djerba, because of the old hostility between them and the Christians, and because qu'entourés on all sides by the sea they were unable to stand on their own.

Given the concern that this situation caused to the population, the 'Azzaba Ouahbites most prominent gathered at the famous Sheikh, the lawyer, the perfect, know and excellent Abu Sa'id bin Yunus No Nadja (God prosper and make the assists and grant its merits prosperity and assistance to all !) to deliberate under his leadership ; because they knew what they could expect happy result of the competition of its salutary advice. When they were all gathered author him, they examined the situation from all points of view, each assistants giving its opinion. They decided by mutual agreement to take only two steps as were possible to adopt such measures of protection and defense against Christians. They resolved first to comply with the requirements of the Prophet (God grant him salvation : "When the dark event envelop you like a dark veil of night, have recourse to the Koran ; it is always authorized intercessor, safe and faithful witness " (see more of h'adith). They decided to organize in most mosques ouahbites, the recitation of the entire Quran in weekly series.

We begin by following the Cow, in the night from Friday to Saturday, which followed the day of their meeting : every night we recite the eighth book to finish the night of Thursday to Friday, or encor, we solve the recitation for each week in a way that is most convenient. For those who would more, it would be meritorious.

Secondly, they resolved to write to their brothers' Azzaba Djerba Nefousa (God gives them strength and protection !) asking them to assemble, with their most fervent intentions, the mosque Tala, oratory deemed to be favorable to the invocations and to intercede with God for all the usual means, to obtain the island and its inhabitants were protected from attacks by Christians (that God exterminates !). they prayed to do the same, together or separately, in all the sanctuaries of the mountain.

These provisions adopted, their secretary wrote on behalf of the whole congregation a letter Sheikh Yunus apostilla his blessed hand urging the execution of the desire of all. They appointed in the following to bring this letter an envoy who had to go to Jebel ; with this exclusive mission. The messenger went and came successively in all the recipients of the letter. Everyone who presented made him a friendly and attentive welcome and responded to the call them "was sent (God's reward for Islam !).

The Nefousa (God keeps !) messages are sent and, having chosen a night known for its excellence, gathered around the sanctuary Tala, to which were asked for their brothers. They brought alms and spent the whole night to recite the Quran, to praise God, to pray and humble begging him to grant wishes that their brothers were responsible for formulating. They did not stop until the next day after the noon prayers and aser : whereafter, they parted.

God showed a clear sign for those who know how to observe it had approved their prayers. There was at that time in Alexandria eleven or twelve ships, six belonged to the island of Djerba and the rest to the people of Tripoli. Or those who had sent the letter nor the recipients of this letter had not thought to include them in their prayers. The captains of these ships had gathered at the head of the city and decided to sail together to the Maghrib without separating, to avoid a surprise Christians against one of their ships, until their arrival in Tripoli. Those captains who leave the bulk of the fleet could be paid into the hands of a fine chef in question whose quota was determined by mutual agreement. But God (that is glorified and exalted !) is the sovereign master in that order and no one can escape its judgments. In His goodness, he reserved the happiness to the people of the island Djerba, following the prayers in various mosques where they had recited the Koran. En effet, all ships arrived safely in Djerba Island. God is the supreme goodness. By divine will and the effect of misfortune that God had reserved for other, any of their ships escaped loss (May God preserve us from evil, he alone has the secret !). Although they had left Alexandria on the same day ; sea scattered and none of them could reach reach the other.

Even more surprising : some of Tripoli had loaded their goods on a ship from the island and the captain was directed to the port of Tripoli. Traders asked him to unload the goods in Tripoli. But a conflict likely to affect all good provisions, having arisen between them and the captain, it returned with all its cargo and arrived in Djerba. This incident caused some problems in the relations between the authorities in Tripoli and those of Djerba. But the agreement is being restored some time after, the Tripolitan merchants came to pick up their goods Djerba. They loaded on a ship and sailed to Tripoli, but on the way, the ship was captured by the Christians with all its cargo (God preserve us from such misfortunes !).

However ; the island of Djerba learned by the new arrival in the country of Christians (that God exterminates !) they actively arming a fleet designed to operate against Muslims ; but no one knew what their goal. Finally on the night of Wednesday to Thursday,17 Rabi 'second year 916leur fleet arrived before the city of Tripoli. Immediately after, Thursday evening, they were masters of the place without having to engage in serious combat and after having made only insignificant losses. The city, its people and their property remained filled. This easy success gave them a higher idea of their strength, the swelled with pride and inspire in them a desire to seize the island of Djerba (God guard and preserves their attacks and stratagems).

Christians (that God exterminates !) sent nearly twenty and some ships1 responsible for recognizing the island and sound the disposition of the inhabitants and their Sheikh. These vessels arrived on the night of Monday to Tuesday, 28 the same month and anchored in a place called Regga, located on the east coast of the island. The news of their arrival reached the Governor Sheikh and Abu Zakariya (God bless him !) while he was in Qachtil. He went immediately to the side of Regga with a large following. When he was close to the fleet ; he entered into negotiations with the Christians by means of messages. This exchange of words, it followed that Christians (that God exterminates !) wanted to impose Sheikh (God strengthens !) conditions that his character would not allow him to accept ; they invited him in case of refusal, prepare to fight. Sheikh (God keeps !) affected the utmost confidence in his strength and pretended to have nothing to fear from Christians, even though they come with double force they had behind them.

Irritated by this attitude, Christians (that God exterminates !) be transported with their vessels Qâchtil el Oued, south of the island. Its c ^ ty, Sheikh and took the following position Ksar Mas'ud, the reality confirmed the happy name, because it was repeatedly conducive to Ouahbites. Arrived in El Oued, Christians (that God makes to perish !) sent several of their vessels in pont2. A number of them took place in this land, went to the door of the bridge and they planted a flag. But by the will of God, this flag fell. They cast therefore a bad omen and were irritated. The sheik and his people, learned of the incident saw in it a good omen and rejoiced. Christians (may God curse !) after spending a few days before the island, departed for Tripoli3.

Sheikh (God keeps !) began to organize, resistance against Christians ; He encouraged people to devote himself entirely to the holy war and met to deliberate on the situation.

On the night of Wednesday to Thursday, 23 Djomâda first, Christian fleet dropped anchor in full force at the same point as before. It included a little over one hundred and twenty or one hundred thirty ships : those who were not counted agree on their number. The number of men, told, was twenty thousand, at the time of their arrival in Tripoli. They had left in that place three thousand soldiers and came with the rest of their force4.

The next morning, people began to move all points of the island and walked to Christians, under the leadership of Sheikh Abu Zechariah and his son. The fleet resumed its first position while Sheikh settled near KCAR Mar'soud and there formed a camp, with all the world around him.

On the night of Thursday to Friday, party night in heaven and on earth, blessed night for Muslims and Muslim, people encouraging each other in the holy war, returned to God and implored his mercy, will forgive their wrongs and moaning about their past mistakes ; their hearts were so moved that they were abandoning most of their debts. They spent all night assembled reciting the Quran, celebrating the greatness of God and imploring forgiveness. It also happened that the 'Azzaba Jebel we talked about earlier, learning that the Christians had started to Djerba, is sent messengers to give appointment to the sanctuary named below. By a happy coincidence, he met in that night and repeated the prayers they made a first. Towards the end of the night, Muslims among Christians heard the noise of the engines of war. Sure now that the Christian war gear. Sure now that Christians would land the next day, they showed an even greater repent for their past sins, and thought they would soon appear before the Lord. Meanwhile, the drums beat ; people ; as we said, is excited to fight, wondered pardon and returned to God. The riders were Sheikh recognitions nearby Christians and related news.

The next, noon, we learned a way that Christians had started and were advancing against Muslims. The distance between the two armies was about six miles. Muslims then rose and put the one line. Sheikh (God keeps !) his son, the Azzaba and VIPs roamed the battlefront, aligned and placed the fighter, inviting them to stand and walk without fear and reminding them of God's word (His power and glory be proclaimed) : How many small troops defeated strong armed. God is with those who resign themselves.

As Muslims had formed their line of battle, those who were at the center could not see those on the right wing or left wing ; because the ground was eventful ; very covered by trees and the line was long. That was then the time of the noon prayer. Among people, each had their prayer, others had been able to accomplish this task ; because if the time allowed for completion of devotions was wide, the situation was "too pressing. Shortly, God's enemies coming towards you noticed and is walking the line against Muslims. When the two armies were close, we saw the horses galloping Christians, armor which they were invested sparkle, the smoke of the powder up into the air ; the sound of their warrior was heard and their muskets.

This show only increased the hard struggle of Muslims who faced the enemy army and grow their audacity. They called for exhorted to fight for religion and Islam and this recommandèrent to God on behalf of his saints and his Koran, on behalf of the sect abâdhite, whose blessing was manifested in many circumstances ; then they swooped in one motion on Christians.

The enemies of God had arranged for each section were others behind. When the shock occurred ; God granted victory to the Muslims, they put to flight the first section and killed many of those who composed. The next section in turn gave penetrating their ranks. It happened at that time a certain disorder among Muslims who faced this troop, but they soon rallied and charged again the assailants one movement 5. When the Muslims were not facing the enemy, they were seized with terror at the musket and took almost all the flight.

Most of them were unaware of the benefits that God had granted to their brethren ; they knew exactly where they were and had not yet seen a single Christian.

All the sudden, while some fighting and the others fled, a group of Muslims led by Sheikh Abu Rabia 'Soleiman, son of Sheikh Zakariya Adou, came to cut communications between Christians and the sea. On both sides, they had seen movement : Muslims felt inspired by a new boldness ; those who took part in the battle fought with greater fury and fugitives rallied, except for a few. Christians were humiliated and fled together. Then the horses of Muslims felled, their warriors slaughtered until they reached the shore : they killed many of them in the same sea.

Twenty some Muslims had died ; as Christians, the figure of the dead could not be established ; but home, rumor accused a loss of more than ten thousand, both statues that Noyes. Car voici ce who is going ensuite, quand Dieu (you glorified exalted qu'il soit !), expressing his grâce you healthy goodness, Decide the EUT faire Perish : Debris from the armée chrétienne ETAI is otherwise rassemblés sur le rivage. In some learned, commandait leur le capitaine defend those who embark on pour avoir to punish the loose pied. Suivant of autres, ils on the par furent empêchés thirst fatigue ET. Quoi qu'il soit in, they spent the night on the shore when at some point the blessing of the sect manifested against them. Cries suddenly arose among them. Believing in a new attack Muslims, while they were complete strangers this alert, they threw themselves into the sea ; waters had eaten and rejected their corpses on the shore.

By his infinite goodness, God raised up against them a violent wind which kept their ships in the Narrows and prevented them from winning the high seas. Eighteen ships, told, large or small, died. Taking advantage of this disaster, their captives fled every night and brought their new Muslims.

They seized several e stranded vessels with their equipment and resources. The sea eats with many other Christians and captive. Muslims laid hands on all weapons and men killed mainly on equipment and clothing drowned and a quantity of gold and silver coins minted in Muslim countries or elsewhere ; invaluable. This was an effect of the goodness that God gives to whom He wills, because it has the infinite goodness.

Christians (that God exterminates !) then came out of the bottleneck in the night from Wednesday to Thursday, Last night Djomâda first. At this moment, the wind rose so veiled that several of their ships still abîmèrent in the waves and their fleet was dispersed (God never meet !). most vessels returned to the port of Tripoli ; other suivèrent the coast Ifriqya, heading Christian countries. May we by God's will never again.

This proves that our sect is the object of God's blessing and our wishes were fulfilled, it is the wind that God sent against them in a season where there is no fear because the event occurred in the first days of September according to the Christian calendar. More, the bottleneck in question was a safe haven for ships in heavy weather ; as soon as they had entered, they no longer had to worry about the state of the sea. Story of the arrival of Christians (that God annihilates !) in the city of Sfax and disembarking on the island of Qarqenna.

Here is what the editor : "When God wanted to destroy the remnants of the Christian fleet, thus fulfilling the wishes expressed earlier, affirming the blessing which he promoted the cult and those who recited the Koran, as we laughed above, elicits the causes suivante : as we have said above, a number of Christians were distributed to their countries. Twenty vessels managed to rally author fleet commander who won them with a port called Christian countries Marroucha or with a name similar to little meadows. He landed in this city.

The information arriving in Muslim countries were expected that Christians were planning to attack one of the cities of the Sahel Ifriqya. People were very scared ; because they knew the weakness of the country, the negligence of the sultan and his carelessness Ifriqya1 prepare resistance against Christians.

In the course of the second decade of Dzou'l qa'da that year, the enemy fleet, composed of the twenty ships, arrived at Sfax. Cavalry and infantry arose on all sides to fight and formed a large army. Christians fear no longer existed in their hearts ; as they learned what had happened to Djerba and they were now convinced, a small group of Muslims worth a large army and a large number of Christians was only little.

When the Christians saw these preparations, they were filled with awe, and after staying three days before Sfax, they left the harbor heading to Qarqenna. When they had gone about six hundred Muslim troops entered the island to combat.

Reached Qarqenna, Christians landed a thousand infidels their soldiers. God knows what their projects ! it is generally believed that they intend to raise a fortress that would have served as a refuge and shelter until they could grab another item. They did not think that Muslims had entered the island to combat. They spent the night after they landed in a place called Madjel es Soltan. Muslims immediately sent spies to know their status. They found them were unsuspecting and slept quietly. They returned to their brothers and renseignèrent on the situation of the infidels and their carelessness. Muslims, walking carefully, set off in their direction. The infidels had not yet been suspecting this movement that Muslims were among them armed. They killed to the last ; there escaped one (God be praised !) It is said that the Muslims lost only five men and three from other.

Monday, third day Dzou'l Hijjah, the news of this event reached Djerba. The days that followed, Christian fleet appeared off the island, but nobody concerns and did not worry its presence. After a few days, Christians departed (God never meet and may he never grant victory to their troops).

End of what has been found

Praise be to God !

1. According Marmol, Pedro de Navarre against Gilves snapped and went with eight galleys and four large law fustes in Alcantara channel.

2. The count did set sail and continued his journey, was recognizing the bridge that connected the island to the mainland ; but the commander of the Moors had already broken for the victory. (Marmol.).

3. Count, having recognized the greater part of the island and saw the place where he could make the defense, left at this company, intent to return. For this purpose he went to Tripoli, where he arrived on the ninth of August. (Marmol.)

4. According Marmol, Pedro de Navarre was in Tripoli 15.000 Fighting Men. He left 3.000 Tripoli man to keep under

*- The conduct of Samaniego and Palomino and sailed to Djerba with the rest. But while he was detained in port by the time otherwise, arrived fifteen large vessels where Don Garcia de Toledo and was one of his brothers, Both son of Alva, who came to participate in the company with several gentlemen brand. Diego Vera, lieutenant of artillery, There was also with 3.000 soldiers of the garrison Candle. The 27 of the month, whole army to sail.

5. It is interesting to compare the relationship between the winner of Djerba with the story of their own disaster made by the Spanish :

"The next day there arose a storm at night ; but that did not last long at daybreak the whole army saw the view of the island of Gelves, the captain-and two other vessels that were before, because of their lightness arrived first at the point of land at the entrance of the channel where the whole army went. Immediately, the Capitane to set sail, and followed by the other, sailed to where was the bridge and came arise two miles away, to Tramontane, near a tower which served oven lookout. He stayed there all day and after the second watch of the night, he re-embark the troops in the galleys, the fustes and brigantines and other vessels rowing, to land more easily ; whereby at daybreak, the soldiers jumped into the water, having in hand their weapons ; because due to low, it was forced to land a mile from the land and do all that path in the water. Whereupon, and wet and tired, we drew up under arms arriving. While it is a landed near the altar round is prepared, where Mass is said. Then Don Garcia de Toledo armed himself with a gold bodice with brassarts and salad and mounted on a dappled gray horse moves forward followed by two pages of which he was the pike and the other spear and a buckler. His uncle, Hernan of Alvares, though weak and sick, seeing him in this state, asked his arms to accompany ; because of the weakness, nephew did not want to suffer ; and as he persisted in spite of the remonstrances of the Count and other nobles, dom Garcia said : He was about to fight and that if he came with them, they would have more respect for his person in combat, to prevent it peradventure mischief befall him. And as the uncle did not want to go ; nephew dismounted and sat down beside him. Finally he re-embarked as by strength and dom Gracia remounted and started packing battalions. It lasted a long time, because as we landed very far, No sooner had we not had such a long drive. So it was more than ten Hours before the army was in battle, and heat was so great that there who offered large sums for a glass of water. There were eleven battalions well nimble people left fifteen thousand men without seafarers. They began to walk with their head two big guns, both sacred and two fauconnaux that dragged soldiers and sailors.

After walking and in good order by burning sablons about a place and a half, soif the fut so great, especially those who dragged the artillery and were bullets and powder barrels on their shoulders that many fell dead, and other years they left their ranks was able to stop. Vionélo Colonel who commanded the vanguard, no longer able, was the first to disband its people, and then the other, his example, the subject of Don Diego Pacheco, that was great and the rear was a little behind on the side of the sea then began to feel the violence of thirst was so great that men fell from their Haunter, and the plain was covered with dead. The brave Don Garcia de Toledo running around to encourage, the assurance of finding water in the palm, which were not far. In this hope, it was with great difficulty, until very thick palms, without in any way, It was discovered one Maure, or friend or foe ; which gave suspicion experienced capitanes.

After walking about half a mile through the palms, the vanguard came under large trees, where the south side, there were some wells between the ruins of an old building. The Moors had left, around, purposely, several pitchers and several other drinking vessels, with ropes to pull water. And three thousand cavalry with infantry amount, were set to ambush a link crossbow there, to give the Christians would flock in crowds and when they would be more messy. This successful as they had imagined : car, as crowded and entrebattait to drink, Melt the Moors came over with shouting their manner. But is was so great, still the alarm sounded and the officers there accourussent, they could never rally under flags those who drank, and they were beaten by pierce enemies before leaving the pitcher's hand. In this surprise, the rest halted and began to withdraw. Don Garcia, who was on horseback, who fought long and is removed twice enemies, dismounted and taking a picnic hand, from that which had been thrown, began to

** head soldiers, to encourage and speech and effect ; and many are being rallied author him, rather than not ashamed , he charged the Moors so it did take the length of a career.

But when they saw this big detached from the rest, they returned to the charge, and large dissipating, Don Garcia was left alone and was a long time to relax, and died with wounds, surrounded by enemies dead or injured his hand. The account, which was farthest, arresting fugitives as everything was in disorder, ran to meet their duty to remonstrate and made both by his words, accompanied by reproaches and tears, he twirled their head ; but it was with so little force that they let go of the foot immediately, and he was forced to follow. The rearguard Whereas disorder, instead to follow to encourage retirement, fled see her before she pressed the enemy and threw their arms to run faster. The Moors not pushed their win with all the warmth they could fear that Christians will be off when ralliassent palms ; which prevented the evil largest. Some say that Moor mounted on a gray horse, with a scarlet cloak, ran to the fugitives and asked them why they fled in Spanish and shouting their, free hit, they tournassent head and the Moors were not so much to fear ; and it is believed that it was one of three renegades who were in the island.

As he came to the sea, thirst was so great that many lost in the judgment and made appalling extravagances.

That day we lost fifteen hundred men, two-thirds died of thirst because those who bought themselves said that there had been no more than five hundred killed or captured, and that most were those who had run the first water.

After spending most of the soldiers in large vessels by means of boats and boats, Count and other nobles seek Don Garcia returned they did not know death. He stayed down three thousand men who re-embarked the next day. But they found little more water in the vessels they had found on the ground, because women and servants had used washing machine, thinking that was already master of the island. Finally, the last day we went in August, After loading all the soldiers and we approached Tripoli with barely enough, after which they separated and each went where he wanted.
